An article by Jon Schmid, a doctoral student in the Ivan Allen College Sam Nunn School of International Affairs, was published in the 2017 issue of the journal Defence and Peace Economics.
Schmid’s article, entitled “The Diffusion of Military Technology,” uses an original data set of patents assigned to defense-serving organizations to investigate the diffusion of military technologies. Contrary to the predictions of previous scholarship, Schmid found no difference in the rate of diffusion between civilian and military technologies. In addition, he found that military technologies assigned to government agencies do not diffuse at different rates than those assigned to firms.
Schmid is advised by Nunn School Associate Professor Margaret E. Kosal.
