African Film Series:
Madame Brouette
Moussa Sene Absa (Senegal) - 2002/105 minutes
Poignant and poetic, this film looks at the predicaments of women in contemporary Senegalese society. The central character, a young divorcee who sells vegetables from her wheelbarrow in the streets of Dakar, is accused of murdering a policeman who happens to be the father of her newborn son. The murder itself, however, seems like a mere "pretext" to examine the nature of gender relations as well as the strength of women in Senegal. A stunning visual treatment of contemporary life in Senegal.
