African Film Series:
Sex, Okra, and Salted Butter
(with special introduction by Dr. Fox Harrell)
Mahamat-Saleh Haroun (Chad)- 2008/81 minutes
Malik, a traditional African husband, is about to see his life in France take an unexpected turn. His younger wife, Hortense, has left him for her new French white lover. Unable to cope with domestic chores, he decides to look for Hortense in his eldest son Dani's apartment. Yet there he finds not Hortense but Dani's gay lover. In this acclaimed satire, Chadian director Mahamat-Saleh Haroun presents a hilarious portrait of Africans living in France, exploring the complexities of gender and generational relations in expatriate communities. Rarely has the experience of African immigrants been depicted in such lighthearted eloquence and keen sense of humor.
