It wasn’t the final result they wanted – a 3-2 loss to the MBA team and a 1-3 finish to their season – but the College of Computing intramural soccer team was all smiles after leaving the field on Tuesday night.

The team took a brief 2-1 lead with seven minutes left to play, scoring two goals over a four-minute period that saw them erase a 1-0 deficit. The first goal came from Ph.D. student Saurabh Sawlani (Algorithms, Combinatorics, and Optimization), who connected from the left side from about 15 yards out for the equalizer. The second came from School of Computer Science professor Santosh Vempala, who kicked in the go-ahead goal from the right side.

The group of MBA students, however, scored back-to-back goals with five and three minutes left in the game, respectively, to grab the win.

Despite the loss, it was a fun end to a season that was born out of common interest in the game.

The group of College of Computing players had made it a regular habit to play pick-up games of soccer in the quad outside the Klaus Advanced Computing Building every Friday afternoon. After playing for a while, the group decided to join the intramural league and make it official.

“It’s a fun game,” said Rahul Nihalani, a graduate student in the School of Computational Science and Engineering, who also served as one of the captains of the team. “Every Friday we play outside Klaus, and we just said, ‘Why not take part in intramurals?’ We got enough people involved where we could make a team, and we had a good time.”

The Georgia Tech Campus Recreation Center offers a number of sports in separate phases of each of the fall, spring, and summer semesters. Information on available sports, rules, eligibility, and how to enroll can be found at the Campus Recreation Center’s intramurals page.
