Abstract:
Laser-activated perfluorocarbon nanodroplets as clinically relevant diagnostic and therapeutic agents
Nanoparticles (NPs) have been touted as the key to revolutionizing medical diagnoses and therapy. However, NPs have struggled to fulfill their potential as theranostic agents in the clinic, often only functioning as therapeutic or diagnostic agents. The goal of the proposed work is to develop clinically relevant, image-guided nanoparticles that can be externally “activated” to allow for enhanced image contrast and widespread therapeutic effects. The nanoparticles, laser-activated perfluorocarbon nanodroplets, demonstrate potential to act as clinically relevant theranostic agents. Preliminary studies have demonstrated enhanced ultrasound and photoacoustic contrast in tissue models and in vivo, as well as therapeutic potential. The proposed work will further investigate PFCnDs for image-guided diagnosis and on-demand therapeutic capabilities for cancer and ischemic cardiovascular applications.
