When students come to the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program, the number one question asked is how to get involved in undergraduate research. The answer has been the same each time; find a faculty member who is doing research in your area of interest, read some of their publications, and then reach out to them via email or stop by their office. While this method may help a student get started with their search, it doesn’t necessarily prepare them for what to expect as an undergraduate researcher or answer all of their questions.

With hundreds of research opportunities on campus in a variety of fields and differing labs, students need to be able to talk with other undergraduate researchers to find out what undergraduate research entails. Will it be a wet or dry lab? What training will they receive? Is a minimum GPA or class prerequisite required to get started?

To meet this need, our office has created the Undergraduate Research Ambassador program. Students were selected from various majors and research areas to become ambassadors for undergraduate research. These students will provide mentoring to those interested in undergraduate research, assistance to students currently participating in undergraduate research, and help to develop programming for the UROP office.
