Gloria Woods, a joint planning and architecture graduate student, has been selected as one of two Student Board Directors for the Georgia chapter of the American Institute of Architects.
Gloria WoodsThe America Institute of Architects is the leading professional membership association for licensed architects in the United States. Every year, the Georgia Chapter of AIA appoints two students to serve as Student Board Directors, who work cooperatively with seven other Board Directors and the Executive Committee. They provide advocacy, fellowship, and communication services to the more than 2,000 AIA members around the state.
This year, College of Design graduate student Gloria Woods has been elected to serve as one of those Student Board Directors.
Woods has been passionate about architecture since her career at Tech began. As an undergraduate student in the architecture program, she took on a variety leadership roles in order to learn more about the practice of architecture and better prepare herself for graduate study. She was Social Chair and President of the Georgia Tech Chapter of the National Organization of Minority Architects (NOMAS), and served as Social Chair and Vice Treasurer of the Georgia Tech Chapter of the American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS) .
Woods' extensive involvement during her first four years at Tech established a strong base of knowledge, skill, and influence in her academic community. As she expanded her architecture expertise, an interest in city planning began to develop.
"Architecture is my first love," says Woods. "Without the experiences and knowledge from my undergraduate studies, I would not be in city planning today."
Most recently, Woods is pursuing her dual graduate degrees in city & regional planning and architecture. As she continues to grow her expertise in both fields, she will take on her new role with AIA Georgia.
Woods' nomination for the position, which was completed by Julie Kim, Associate Chair of the Georgia Tech School of Architecture, came as a big surprise.
"I was so honored," says Woods. "I always wanted to be more involved in AIA and now I get the chance. I can't express how happy and proud I am that my effort for the past 5 years has been positive and noticed."
Woods will be expected to help set the strategic vision for AIA Georgia, and work with other board members and staff to set the scope of activities of the organization; provide fiduciary oversight of AIA Georgia, and ensure that the organization is utilizing its resources strategic vision; and act as the public face of AIA Georgia by attending public events, conferences, and meetings.
Additionally, Student Board Directors are asked to participate in board committees and provide financial management, including adoption and oversight of the annual budget.
Woods is looking forward to her new responsibilities. "I know that this position is a step in the right direction for me and my career. I hope while holding one of the two positions as Student Director of AIA Georgia I will honorably represent Georgia Tech, AIA Georgia, and the students of the architecture profession in the State of Georgia."
