An endowed lecture was established by alumni, faculty and friends in honor of Professor Douglas C. Allen in appreciation for his long-time dedication to the College of Architecture as a teacher, colleague and leader. The project's foremost objective was to thank Doug for his inspired teaching and thinking over his tenure and for his inspired work as Interim Dean. Participants also wanted to give the lecture series a shot of adrenaline which would benefit the College and community for generations to come. Finally, donors saw the Douglas C. Allen Lecture as an annual reunion around a great speaker in honor of a cherished figure at the College.

Jim Winer (Arch 1982) and David Green (Arch 1987), both former students of Allen, spearheaded the secret project simply by circulating an email and urging their contacts to reach out to others. Mickey Steinberg (Arch 1954) made a major gift which really made the endowment possible. The fund, totaling over $100,000 was announced to Allen at an alumni gathering at The Globe restaurant June 9. The effort garnered contributions from 110 individuals, companies and families—many of whom made their first gift to the College of Architecture.

"You all have no idea what this means," said Allen at the celebration. "When money is tight, the first thing to suffer is our ability to engage lecturers." A Georgia native and graduate of the University of Georgia and Harvard School of Design, Allen often asserts that guest lectures foster important intellectual exchange among professors, students and practitioners.

Allen served as interim dean for the year following the unexpected death of Dean Thomas D. Galloway, coordinating taskforce groups to honor Galloway's vision and to ensure progress while the College anticipated the selection of its fourth dean. "Doug's work as Interim Dean and as a teacher and colleague are valuable to each of us and to the College," said Winer. "As people are still learning about the endowment, it's important to note that it's not too late to contribute to the fund. Others can continue momentum by contacting Susan Sanders at susan.sanders@coa.gatech.edu." Many alumni have noted their plan to give to the fund annually.

Allen joined the Architecture Program as an Assistant Professor in 1977. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 1982, Professor in 1989 and Associate Dean of Academic and Student Affairs in July 2002. He received his Master of Landscape Architecture from Harvard University in 1976. Recently, he was awarded the Governor's Award for Historic Preservation Stewardship by the Historic Preservation Division of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources for his longtime stewardship of the College of Architecture buildings on the campus of the Georgia Institute of Technology. He has generously agreed to continue as Associate Dean.

The first lecture will take place in 2009. Announcements are forthcoming.
