The Georgia Tech Chapter of the National Organization of Minority Architecture Students captured second place in a national competition to design a memorial and interpretive center of the Black Civil Rights Movement in Washington D.C.
The team's submission, entitled "The Journey," is an interpretation of the Black Civil Rights Movement through themes of hope and change.
"The Black Civil Rights Movement is a journey that has continued through polarized landscapes of dialectical dualities filled with tragedy and triumph, segregation and unity, despair and hope," the group states in its design intent. "In honor of those who have persevered and protested through the struggle, we have designed this place of rememberance, this place of enlightenment, this place of celebration."
The challenge was to interpret how a movement as powerful as the Black Civil Rights Movement could be translated into a building project incorporating likely components such as places for reflection, education, celebration, and other functional spaces.
