There is now a CONTENT FREEZE for Mercury while we switch to a new platform. It began on Friday, March 10 at 6pm and will end on Wednesday, March 15 at noon. No new content can be created during this time, but all material in the system as of the beginning of the freeze will be migrated to the new platform, including users and groups. Functionally the new site is identical to the old one. webteam@gatech.edu

Summaries

Summary Sentence: Veronika Zanitsyna, Emory University

Full Summary: Abstract
Unlike laboratory mice, humans are not immunologically naïve, and we would like to understand how prior history of influenza infections and vaccinations will affect the responses to the vaccines and new infections. Original Antigenic Sin (OAS) describes the observation that antibodies to the first encountered influenza strain dominate following infection with new drifted strains. At the same time, studies in humans indicate that vaccination results in limited boosting of antibodies to the conserved epitopes on the influenza’s major surface molecule, hemagglutinin. Can we reconcile these two observations? I discuss how using multi-epitope models we can reveal the rules of boosting of the antibodies to the evolutionarily conserved epitopes, and how pre-existing antibodies may sabotage development of “universal” flu vaccines.

How does prior immunity affect recall responses to influenza?
