There is now a CONTENT FREEZE for Mercury while we switch to a new platform. It began on Friday, March 10 at 6pm and will end on Wednesday, March 15 at noon. No new content can be created during this time, but all material in the system as of the beginning of the freeze will be migrated to the new platform, including users and groups. Functionally the new site is identical to the old one. webteam@gatech.edu

Abstract

New advanced powered prostheses and orthoses are helping to restore function to lower limb amputees by reducing the metabolic cost of walking and restoring normal biomechanics. These devices can aid individuals with walking disability by providing powered assistance with a number of tasks such as standing up, walking, climbing stairs, and traversing sloped or uneven terrain. An important function of these devices is to timely and accurately recognize user intent to provide the optimal level of assistance based on task demands. My research has focused on developing intuitive and smart intent recognition systems for these devices to predict user intent to provide timely power assistance to users. Myoelectric information provides a non-invasive approach to access the user’s nervous system to provide a control signal that precedes force generation. This talk will focus on our experiences to date with using myoelectric control both for a powered transfemoral prosthesis and a powered hip orthosis/exoskeleton.
