The Michael R. Hollis Internship Program Guidelines

The Fulton-DeKalb Hospital Authority Internship Program bears the name of former Board of Trustee member, the late Michael R. Hollis.  Mr. Hollis left a legacy of innovation, public service, and commitment to health care for all persons, particularly the indigent. Students will be afforded an opportunity to participate in an internship program in honor of Mr. Hollis.

This program integrates academics with practical experience. It is an opportunity for a student to assist the organization with a project or initiative related directly or indirectly to the student’s academic work. It is designed to provide an opportunity for the student to gain knowledge and valuable work experience in the health arena, which incorporates many disciplines. Some of the fields that are potentially available for student internships include, but are not limited to public health, public policy, policy administration, marketing, public relations, finance, and sociology. The Internship Program provides opportunitiesto:

  • Develop professional work habits
  • Explore career objectives
  • Earn  funds to support college education
  • Apply classroom learning to  the work setting and earn academic credit
  • Gain valuable work experience and professional contacts that will help in securing employment after graduation

Intern Defined

A student intern is a person who is attending an accredited university, college or vocational/technical school and is hired by The Fulton-DeKalb Hospital Authority.  Student interns are not eligible for leave, holiday, health insurance, or retirement benefits.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for The Fulton-DeKalb Hospital Authority’s Student Internship Program,               a student:

  • Must be currently enrolled in an accredited college, university, or vocational-technical program in the United States;
  • Eligible to receive credit hours
  • Must be a current full-time/part-time student, as defined by that school, in the semester or quarter in which he/she applies for internship;
  • Must be at least a junior by the beginning of the internship if you are an undergraduate student.
  • Must have a cumulative Grade Point Average of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.

 Any student in the United States meeting the above requirements may apply for internship, but preference will be given to those students who are attending a college, university or vocational/technical school in Georgia. If at any point in the internship program, the intern ceases to be enrolled in school, he/she will no longer be eligible to participate. In that event, the intern will immediately be terminated from the program.

Internship Duration

The internship shall be for a maximum of 10 weeks, a semester.  Exact starting and ending dates and daily schedules will be arranged between the intern and The FDHA.

Compensation

The FDHA will cover the cost of parking for interns and other expenses incidental, travel (gas), to their work with The FDHA, as shall be approved in advance by The FDHA Chief Executive Officer or designee; no further compensation will be provided.

Scholarship

If a scholarship is paid to an institution and the intern does not return to the institution, the intern is responsible for ensuring that all funds are immediately returned to The FDHA.

Duration

Participation in the internship program may be renewed for one additional semester based upon the consent of The FDHA CEO. Renewal consideration will be based upon the intern’s performance during preceding internship successful completion of the additional 10 week term.
