Things to Do in Atlanta during Labor Day Weekend

Congratulations! If you’re reading this, you’ve made it through the first two weeks of the fall semester.

The initial weeks at Tech can be overwhelming but, luckily, Labor Day serves as a perfect respite from your new, busy schedule.

If you need one final taste of summer, take this weekend to relax and unwind. Atlanta is offering plenty of opportunities to make this a fun weekend.

Off-Campus Events

DragonCon

From Sept. 2-5, Atlanta will host the 30th Annual DragonCon event. A highlight of this event is the 2016 DragonCon Parade down Peachtree Street, which begins Saturday at 10 a.m. If you’re unable to attend the parade, tune in to DragonConTV. The event will be broadcast on the CW Atlanta station at 10 a.m. and rebroadcast at 8 p.m. that evening.

After the parade, check out DragonCon Night at the Georgia Aquarium from 7 to 11 p.m. This event features a costume contest, special photo opportunities, and a 4-D theater experience.

Georgia Tech Football

The Yellow Jackets will take on the Boston College Eagles in Dublin, Ireland, on Saturday, Sept. 3, for the Aer Lingus College Football Classic. Cheer them on by watching ESPN 2 at 7:30 a.m. Saturday morning. This ACC matchup is the opener of the 2016 season and will be shown on TVs around the Student Center. Go Jackets!

Stone Mountain Park

If you have transportation to get off campus, check out some of the Labor Day weekend events at Stone Mountain Park. The park will honor “everyday working heroes” through their Lasershow Spectacular in Moutainvision followed by a fireworks display. The show will be held Saturday, Sunday, and Monday nights at 9:30 p.m.

The Lasershow features state-of-the-art graphics and effects, flame cannons, fireworks, and iconic music. The Lasershow is included with a $15 parking fee which can be purchased here.

Green Market at Piedmont Park

From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 3, Piedmont Park will host its weekly Green Market. The market offers fresh produce, meats, cheeses, and snacks and was voted one of Atlanta’s top five farmer’s markets by Access Atlanta. Visit the park entrance at 12th Street and Piedmont Avenue for access. Penny Serenade and the violin duo, duoAolias, will be providing entertainment at the stage near the Visitor Center.

  • Cost: $5 for Tech Students
Tech Rec
  • Location: 1st Floor of Student Center
  • Cost: Bowling - $2.79-$3.38 per game; Billiards - $3.99-$4.59 per hour; Gaming - $1.99 per hour; Table Tennis - $2.00 per game
  • Note: Closed Monday, Sept. 5.

Other Ideas

  • Picnic in the BioTech Quad.
  • Walk to Sublime Donuts, Amelie’s, or Waffle House for brunch.
  • Play frisbee with friends on one of Georgia Tech’s green spaces.
