The Building Services Department was recently awarded the Green Seal Certification for their revolutionary Renewable Cleaning program. Georgia Tech strives to provide a safe, clean, and eco-friendly environment, but that is not always easy when the most common cleaning products contain harsh chemicals. In addition to their toxicity, many common cleaning practices generate large amounts waste and unnecessary costs for the Institute. The Renewable Cleaning program was implemented in 2003 to alleviate some of the environmental, financial, and health-related issues associated with keeping a university clean. After 13 years of growth and development, the program has made Georgia Tech only the fourth university in the nation and the first university in the South to receive Green Seal Certification for its cleaning practices.
A key component of the program that earned Georgia Tech the Green Seal Certification is the Building Services staff, led by Associate Director Tommy Little. This group displays incredible resourcefulness and adaptability as the Renewable Cleaning program continues to expand. The custodial staff attends monthly training sessions where they receive updates on the latest methods and they practice working with the top-of-the-line equipment. The collective effort of all of the members of Building Services and Georgia Tech ensures that the cleaning of the large facilities at this university is streamlined and optimized in the most sustainable ways.
