Each year since 2009, the Georgia Tech Police Department (GTPD) has rolled out the welcome mat for the campus community with Campus Safety Day.
This year’s event will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 6, at Tech Walkway and will include a number of partnering agencies and on-campus programs designed to keep students safe and healthy.
“The objective of Campus Safety Day is to engage and educate the campus community about all the services we provide them, technology and equipment we use, and to meet the people who help keep the campus safe,” said Officer Brian Bonus of the campus Core Team. “We also would like to highlight other campus departments that help keep them safe and our local first responder partners that aid in safeguarding the community.”
Campus Safety Day 2016 will include static displays of all GTPD vehicles and equipment, the K9 unit, motorcycles, and Mobile Field Force.
In addition to the static displays and equipment, students can try out the DUI simulator, see MARTA’s mobile command unit, meet the Atlanta Police Department’s (APD) mounted patrol and check out the APD SWAT armored vehicle. Students will also have an opportunity to meet GTPD Chief Rob Connolly and get a selfie with K9 units Koda and Miley.
Joining GTPD this year – in addition to the Atlanta Police Department – will be the MARTA Police, Georgia State Patrol, Fulton County Sheriff’s Office, Atlanta Fire Department, the Midtown Alliance and Georgia Emergency Management Agency. Campus services such as Health Services, the pharmacy, the Office of Information Technology (OIT) cybersecurity team, the Office of Emergency Preparedness, Environmental Health & Safety, and the Bicycle Infrastructure Improvement Committee will also be present.
Anyone who signs up for the LiveSafe app for the mobile phone will receive GTPD giveaways and T-shirts. The more than 5,300 current LiveSafe users comprise about 18 percent of the Georgia Tech community.
“We hope the students will feel safe and secure on campus and have confidence in GTPD,” Bonus said. “It’s not just GTPD, but a lot of the agencies and programs here on campus are committed to putting the students’ safety and security as our main priority. We are here for them.”
