This semester, the School of Computational Science and Engineering (CSE) welcomes a new professor, director of health informatics, research technologist, and research scientist to Georgia Tech. New and promoted team members include:

  • Dr. Ümit V. Çatalyürek (pictured at right, top) joins the CSE faculty from The Ohio State University, where he held a joint appointment in the Department of Biomedical Informatics and the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Çatalyürek received his Ph.D. in Computer Engineering and Information Science from Bilkent University, Turkey. He brings more than 17 years of research and teaching experience to the school.
  • Dr. Jon Duke, MD, MS (pictured at right, middle) joins the CSE as its new director of health informatics and will lead the school’s big data in medicine projects. He holds a joint appointment as the principal research scientist at the Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI). Dr. Duke previously held an appointment as a senior scientist and director of data analytics at the Regenstrief Center for Biomedical Informatics.
  • Research Technologist Will Powell comes to Georgia Tech from IBM, where he worked for 12 years as a remote technical support specialist and as a technical education team lead. Powell serves a dual role between CSE and the TSO Research Program Support Group as part of an ongoing effort to increase research technology support in the College of Computing.
  • Former CSE postdoctoral researcher Sharma Thankachan (pictured at right, bottom) is now a research scientist for the school. He works with Professor Srinivas Aluru researching practical algorithm designs for solving problems related to big data and biology.

“With these hires, Georgia Tech continues to attract thought leaders in healthcare analytics and high-performance computing,” says David Bader, chair of the School of Computational Science and Engineering. “Their combined experiences bring further depth and expertise to CSE and our various initiatives.”
