Seminar Abstract
Simulated Moving Bed (SMB) chromatography, a continuous counter-current chromatographic
separation process, is a powerful bioseparation technique widely used in the pharmaceutical,
food, and chemical industries. Due to the complex dynamics, however, systematic optimization
of SMB is still a challenging problem. In this work, a tailored approach where the mathematical
model is fully discretized and the resulting nonlinear programming (NLP) problem is solved by
an interior-point solver. The proposed approach is also applied to an SMB superstructure to find
novel operating schemes. Finally, some recent topics are also discussed, such as on-line
optimization and reactive separation.
