Having a great advisor can make all the difference in a student’s success. Just ask Laura Jones Alger, Academic Advisor in the School of Building Construction. Alger had a fantastic advisor while she attended graduate school. This led to a career in higher education and a determination to help students succeed.

Alger began her higher education career at SCAD, moved to Georgia State, and has been advising students at Georgia Tech for over four years. In October 2015, Alger joined the School of Building Construction as Academic Advisor II.

Alger uses the student’s own goals to advise them and can assist with the puzzle that is registration and scheduling. She is determined to help them graduate and succeed at Georgia Tech. She does this with an interest and enthusiasm that students appreciate. “Laura is so full of life and always ready to help students! She is great and such a breath of fresh air,” said Adeniyi Ogunsua, a master’s student in the School of BC.

In addition to student advisement, Alger volunteers with the Homeless Student Task Force and First Gen Students (first generation, foster, and homeless students). She really cares about the GT students and their continued success. This fall she is tackling a new challenge-teaching a section of GT1000. She is eager to help freshmen navigate Georgia Tech and get them excited about their education.

Alger grew up in South Georgia and has made her home in Atlanta. She is an artist at heart and applies that artistic vision to advising School of BC students. She’s interested in construction and relates as an artist to the students that develop and build. She appreciates the size of the School of Building Construction, where she can get to know the students she advises.

“When Laura joined Building Construction last year, she hit the ground running given her deep knowledge of course scheduling and registration, besides her genuine willingness to become a caring advisor for BC students. She is a great resource for students, faculty and staff alike”, added Daniel Castro, Ph.D., P.E., Professor and Chair, School of Building Construction.

So get to know your advisor, Laura Jones Alger,--the best resource on campus!
