12:15 SCALE-UP: Student-Centered Active Learning Environment

Guest Speaker: Dr. Robert Beichner
Alumni Distinguished Professor of Physics
Director of STEM Education Initiative
North Carolina State University

How do you keep a class of 100 students actively learning? How can students practice communication and teamwork skills in a large class? How do you boost the performance of diverse groups of students?

Find out how the SCALE-UP Project has addressed these concerns in physics, chemistry, math, biology, engineering, business and literature classes that are being taught in rooms that look more like restaurants than lecture halls. Using data that compares over 16,000 students in various SCALE-UP settings for both large and small classes, Dr. Beichner will highlight how the SCALE-UP approach is changing what's happening in higher education courses across the nation.

Note: Georgia Tech's Clough Undergraduate Learning Commons will have two SCALE-UP classrooms. GT faculty are piloting a prototype SCALE-UP classroom this semester.
