There is now a CONTENT FREEZE for Mercury while we switch to a new platform. It began on Friday, March 10 at 6pm and will end on Wednesday, March 15 at noon. No new content can be created during this time, but all material in the system as of the beginning of the freeze will be migrated to the new platform, including users and groups. Functionally the new site is identical to the old one. webteam@gatech.edu

Title: Rediscovering the dynamics of classical systems by fractional diffusion
Abstract: Fractional differential equations are becoming increasingly used as a powerful modelling approach for understanding the many aspects of non-locality and spatial heterogeneity. In this talk, I will illustrate how the fractional counterparts of many classical reaction-diffusion systems can exhibit dramatically different dynamics to those of standard diffusion, and as such can greatly extend the modelling capabilities of basic models in physics. In particular, the biophysical interpretation of these systems in the context of excitable media will be discussed, with broad implications in cardiac electrophysiology. The proposed approach may also have important applications in the clinical identification of cardiac structural abnormalities.
