There is now a CONTENT FREEZE for Mercury while we switch to a new platform. It began on Friday, March 10 at 6pm and will end on Wednesday, March 15 at noon. No new content can be created during this time, but all material in the system as of the beginning of the freeze will be migrated to the new platform, including users and groups. Functionally the new site is identical to the old one. webteam@gatech.edu

The Center for Advanced Communications Policy (CACP) and the Internet & Public Policy Project (IP3) welcome College of Computing Professor Irfan Essa on the role of computational journalism and its impact on society.
Abstract:
Fundamentally, journalism is the process of collecting news information and disseminating that information with a layer of contextualization and understanding provided by journalists in the form of a news story. Recent advances in computational technology are rapidly affecting how news is gathered, reported, and distributed, and how stories are authored and told. New technologies for aggregating, visualizing, summarizing, consuming, and collaborating on news are becoming increasingly popular. They are challenging the traditional practices of journalism and directly affecting the future of news production and consumption. I am interested in the study of how computational processes have resulted in the complete change of journalism practice and how it impacts society. In this session I will discuss some of these changes and highlight what to expect with the continued growth of social networking and social media.
