Did you know Georgia Tech’s motto is “Progress and Service?” Opportunities to put this motto into action begin with FASET and continue into the start of the fall semester. Each of the following programs — Small Act Big Impact, EngageATL, and Into the Streets —will connect new students with Tech’s tradition of service and provide opportunities for students to how to meaningful engage with civic engagement at Georgia Tech throughout the upcoming year.
Small Act Big Impact is a summer-long collection drive to benefit Atlanta Mission, one of Tech’s community partners. New students and their families are encouraged to bring a donation of travel-sized toiletry items and/or art supplies to their FASET session. On Friday, Aug. 19, at 5 p.m. in the Student Center, students are invited to volunteer alongside upper-class students, faculty, and staff to assemble all the donated items into critical needs kits for Atlanta Mission, which strives to end homelessness in Atlanta. Last year, more than 5,000 items were donated and 1,118 critical needs kits were packaged. For more information, including a full list of requested items, visit engage.gatech.edu.
EngageATL is an extended orientation program that immerses new students in Tech’s tradition of service. Sponsored by the Division of Student Life and the Center for Serve-Learn-Sustain, EngageATL will provide a group-oriented, community-based service experiences where participants engage with the Georgia Tech and Atlanta community through direct service projects with community organizations and an emphasis on sustainable communities. With a small team of student leaders, participants will learn about sustainability and civic engagement at Georgia Tech. Registration will close Aug. 1, at 5 p.m. Space is available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Into the Streets is Tech’s annual day of service for first-year students. The event, sponsored by the student organization MOVE, will take place Saturday, Aug. 27. Additional event details will be announced later this summer; in the meantime, new students are encouraged to visit MOVE’s table during FASET and to connect with MOVE through OrgSync at orgsync.gatech.edu.
