There is now a CONTENT FREEZE for Mercury while we switch to a new platform. It began on Friday, March 10 at 6pm and will end on Wednesday, March 15 at noon. No new content can be created during this time, but all material in the system as of the beginning of the freeze will be migrated to the new platform, including users and groups. Functionally the new site is identical to the old one. webteam@gatech.edu

Abstract: The objective of the proposed research is to develop a novel protective relay, which is named EBP relay (dynamic state Estimation Based Protective relay) that can protect the synchronous generators and induction machines securely and reliably when they have internal faults. Specifically, the EBP relay monitors the consistency between the machine measurements and the machine dynamic model via dynamic state estimation. Any mismatch between the measurements and the model indicates machine internal abnormalities and the EBP relay would trip the machine when the internal fault occurs. Compared to legacy machine protective relays, the proposed EBP relay requires very few settings and no coordination with other relays, which greatly reduces the possibility of relay mis-operation caused by the setting and coordination complexity. In addition, the proposed dynamic state estimation based protection scheme in the EBP relay is implemented in an object-oriented manner so that it can be easily applied to all kinds of machines.
