As the Work Life Specialist at Georgia Tech, it’s not always easy to explain to others what I do. So let me first begin with the definition of work-life balance.

The definition I prefer is: “meaningful, daily achievement and enjoyment in each of your four life quadrants: Work, Family, Friends, and Self.”  In a nutshell, work life balance involves carefully combining your work life and your home life to achieve enjoyment in both.

But, is that even possible? Some would say no, but I would say that you don’t have to choose one over the other. Rather, you look for the harmony between the two knowing that it will vary over time, often on a daily basis. The right balance for you today will probably be different for you tomorrow. The balance when you are single will be different if you marry; if you have children; when you start a new career; or when you are nearing retirement.

Here at Georgia Tech, we offer many work-life programs to assist you. We offer childcare, flexible work arrangements, a faculty/staff assistance program, tuition assistance, Be Well Benefits Education Series — which include information for your physical, financial, mental and emotional health — summer camp resources, and other discounts, perks and programs. All can be found on the Work/Life page of the Human Resources site.

Do you need more detailed information on how you can balance your own work and home life? Then join us on Wednesday, July 13, from noon – 1 p.m. in the Scheller College of Business, room 200, for the Be Well Workshop “Work-Life Balance.” Learn some strategies and tips on how to manage your work life and your personal life and create harmony between the two. You must register for this workshop and you are welcome to bring your lunch. We hope to see you there!
