Students Vote "Yes" to Re(in)novate Student CenterVoting for the Student Center Re(in)novation Referendum closed Wednesday night, with 66 percent of 5,025 students voting in favor of introducing a mandatory fee to cover part of the cost of the Student Center renovation. This serves as a greenlight for the project, a planned 120,000-square-foot renovation and expansion of the current Student Center facilities.
“We are thrilled to find that our proposal for the new building resonates with students. It was encouraging to see so many of them participate in the process,” said Student Center Director Lindsay Bryant. “Now that we know the student body wants to make this a reality, we can move on to the next step: discovering and defining what the new building should look like.”
With the passage of the referendum, the proposed fee will be put before the Georgia Tech Mandatory Fee Committee in November. If approved, the fee and project proposal will go to the Board of Regents for approval in spring 2017. Upon approval from the Board of Regents, the bid process for design and architecture firms will begin. The Student Center plans to use surveys, focus groups, public forums, and pilot spaces to continue to engage the student body and incorporate their feedback until the design phase is completed, which is expected in late 2018.
Some new facilities could be open as early as 2020. The fee will be implemented once those facilities become available for student use. More information on the phasing and construction of the project will be published as it becomes available.
