The Margaret Guthman New Instrument Competition has been called an "X-prize for music" and compared to a TED conference for new musical instrument designers. But even at an event centered around the creation of interesting new ways to combine music with technical innovations, the human element still takes center stage. For Gil Weinberg, the Director of Georgia Tech's Center for Music Technology, the performer is still a key component in any musical performance.
"It’s a difficult task to judge between instruments, and just like any art based competition it comes to the personal preference of the judges," Weinberg said. "Maybe the performer is a great performer, but the instrument may be not so great, but the performer can get out from this instrument something unique." The competition began as a piano recital, but since changing focus to new instruments, it has shifted into a full scale international competition - of the twenty-five semi-finalists, twelve different countries were represented.
