Milton Stewart School of Industrial and Systems Engineering, cleaned up this summer carrying away four prestigious awards for his seminal contributions to improve statistical theory and methods and applications to quality and productivity. He received the esteemed 2008 Shewhart Medal from the American Society for Quality (ASQ); an honorary doctorate degree from the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada; the American Statistical Association Quality and Productivity Research Conference Honoree; and the 2008 Pan Wen-Yuan Award.
On May 5, Professor Wu received the 2008 Shewhart Medal from the American Society for Quality (ASQ) for ""seminal contributions to parameter design and quality improvement; for defining and building a modern system of experimental design; for education of a generation of quality professionals and professors; and for dedicated professional and editorial service in promoting quality improvement." The Shewhart Medal, named after Walter Shewhart, pioneer of modern quality control, is ASQ's highest honor for outstanding leadership in the field of modern quality control. The medal was presented during the ASQ World Congress in Houston.
In June, Professor Wu received an honorary doctorate degree in Mathematics from the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada. He also delivered a speech to the graduating class at Waterloo during their commencement ceremony on June 13.
Professor Wu was also selected as the 2008 ASA Quality and Productivity Research Conference Honoree for "seminal contributions to statistical theory and methods for quality and productivity.* The conference, jointly honoring Professor Wu and fellow statistician Professor George Box, was held on June 4 in Madison, Wisconsin.
Professor Wu also won the 2008 Pan Wen-Yuan Award. The Pan Wen-Yuan Award, with its cash prize, is regarded as Taiwan's most prestigious technical award. He is the first statistician or applied mathematician to have won this award.
Dr. Wu is a professor at the Stewart School of Industrial and Systems Engineering and holds the Coca-Cola Chair in Engineering Statistics. Before joining Georgia Tech in the summer of 2003, he was the H. C. Carver Professor of Statistics and Professor of Industrial and Operations Engineering at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, the GM/NSERC Chair in Quality and Productivity at the University of Waterloo, and a professor in the Statistics Department at the University of Wisconsin. He holds a B.S. in Mathematics from National Taiwan University and Ph.D. in Statistics from the University of California, Berkeley.
