What is Team Science? Over the last 25 years, there has been a dramatic increase in the scale and complexity of STEM research. The growing scale of science has been accompanied by a dramatic shift toward collaborative research referred to as “team science.” A new discipline, The Science of Team Science (SciTS), has emerged from the study of strategies for understanding and enhancing the success of collaborative, team-based STEM research. SciTS is founded on a body of knowledge about team-based research and is a response to the need to better educate faculty, postdocs, and graduate students about effective collaboration. The goal of this education is to develop teams that work together more effectively toward their goal, such as submitting more competitive grant proposals and more successful implementation of multi-investigator research projects.
