No new content can be created during this time, but all material in the system as of the beginning of the freeze will be migrated to the new platform, including users and groups. Before there was an Iranian nuclear deal, the international community and the U.S. have been dealing with the elimination of an entire class of WMD. Join Ms. Carmen Kifer, U.S. Army, for a discussion of the challenges that the US and others face as we seek to rid the world of the threat of chemical weapons once and for all. The Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) seeks to achieve a world free of an entire class of weapons of mass destruction and to foster cooperation in the peaceful uses of chemistry. Since entering into force almost two decades ago, the CWC and its members states have successfully destroyed more than 90% of the world’s declared chemical weapons. Once a treaty is ratified, does the real work begin?
Ms. Carmen Kifer is a chemical engineer who works as a civilian for the US. Army in the Chemical Materials Agency (CMA). Ms. Kifer joined the CMA’s Center for Treaty Implementation and Compliance (CTIC) in 2008 to manage compliance with the CWC for the safe assessment, storage, and elimination of chemical weapons (CW) in the US. Previously, she served as Treaty Manager for the destruction of former CW production facilities and non-stockpile CW operations.
