Speaker: Ms. Kim Felix, Vice President for Transportation Technology, United Parcel Service, Inc. (UPS) Information Services
Seminar Title: Driving Innovation through Technology Convergence
Abstract:
Technology’s role in business has evolved over time from novelty to administrative support to strategic enabler. The next stage in the evolutionary path is market differentiation. Intelligent use of technology drives strategic advantage. Intelligent convergence of multiple technologies drives differentiation and significant competitive advantage.
UPS’s Transportation Technology Group (TTG) brings a broad range of technologies to bear in value-added solutions for the Airline and Ground Transportation business units. Key technology focus areas for the TTG team include:
This talk outlines approaches in use to leverage key aspects across multiple of these technologies to develop innovative solutions using examples from the Airline and Transportation business domains. The Near Real Time (NRT) project is one example project executed in the “Big Data”/Analytics domain capturing as many as 8,700 events -- pickups, sorts within distribution centers, transfers between transportation modes, and deliveries -- per second, 24-hours per day. The project forms a base for continued expansion of events and data collected from “smart” devices/equipment (IOT) with the ability to add increasing levels of “learning” sophistication by proactively analyzing patterns in “Big Data” sets. The end result enables multiple groups in the organization to simultaneously view via mobile devices the state of the operation “real-time” from different perspectives for better decision making in managing the transportation network and more timely, accurate responses for better customer service. Key differentiators in the Transportation and Logistics industry.
