It’s hard work being funny—especially for robots

There is now a CONTENT FREEZE for Mercury while we switch to a new platform. It began on Friday, March 10 at 6pm and will end on Wednesday, March 15 at noon. No new content can be created during this time, but all material in the system as of the beginning of the freeze will be migrated to the new platform, including users and groups. Mark Riedl was intervied by Daniela Hernandez on Fusion about humanizing robots through humor to enhance our interaction experience with them. “The larger goal is making AIs that come across to humans as more natural,” said Mark Riedl, an interactive computing expert at Georgia Institute of Technology who studies humor. “Humor can be used to put people at ease and create rapport. This will be crucial where we’re building societies surrounded by AIs.”
