There is now a CONTENT FREEZE for Mercury while we switch to a new platform. It began on Friday, March 10 at 6pm and will end on Wednesday, March 15 at noon. No new content can be created during this time, but all material in the system as of the beginning of the freeze will be migrated to the new platform, including users and groups. Functionally the new site is identical to the old one. webteam@gatech.edu

Summary Sentence: IDC Seminar: Transforming Complex Product Design and Development: From Data to Insight using Visual Analytics

Full Summary: No summary paragraph submitted.

Today's business environment is complex, dynamic, and uncertain. Companies are continuously exposed to a myriad of challenges, including innovation, technological disruptions, global competition, and shifting economic, social, and regulatory conditions. To ensure survival and growth, decision makers must lead their enterprise with an effective data-driven strategy.

With the remarkable growth in digital business data, there are enormous opportunities to use visual analytics - the fusion of interactive data visualization with analytical models -- to explore data and support complex product design and development decisions. However, developing visual analytic solutions decisions is not trivial. It requires careful curation of heterogeneous (aka "wide") data, a deep systemic understanding of the decision context and the decision maker(s), and effective implementation of appropriate analytic approaches, visual representations and interaction techniques.

Blending methods and techniques from information visualization, data mining, systems engineering, and management science, we design, build, and evaluate interactive visual "macroscopes" for strategic decision-making support. In this talk, I will present the foundational theories and practices of visual analytics through rich illustrative examples ranging from the micro (product design) to the macro level (business ecosystems), discuss the opportunities and challenges of how to navigate from data to insight, and conclude with suggestions for future research and practice.
