Regents’ Professor Karsten Schwan (CS), who passed away in September, has been elected a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).

The achievement of Fellow is conferred upon those with an outstanding record of accomplishment in any field of interest represented by IEEE – a 52-year-old organization best known for developing standards for the computer and electronics industry. Its mission is to promote the development and application of electrotechnology “and allied sciences for the benefit of humanity” as well as the advancement of the profession and its members.

A mutual friend and colleague suggested that Tom Conte, professor (CS and ECE), nominate Schwan to become an IEEE Fellow.

“Karsten was very happy when I asked him if I could,” Conte said. “I wish he were still here to hear the news he was elevated to Fellow.  Nominating Karsten was difficult only because the nomination form had a word-length limit. His accomplishments overflowed the form!"

From IEEE: "The IEEE Grade of Fellow is conferred by the IEEE Board of Directors upon a person with an outstanding record of accomplishments in any of the IEEE fields of interest. The total number selected in any one year cannot exceed one-tenth of one- percent of the total voting membership. IEEE Fellow is the highest grade of membership and is recognized by the technical community as a prestigious honor and an important career achievement." More here.

Dean Zvi Galil, the John P. Imlay Dean of the College of Computing, said Schwan likely would have appreciated the honor but quickly gone back to work.

“If Karsten were here, I imagine he would smile at this news and enjoy it for perhaps five or 10 minutes before moving on to his next task,” Galil said. “As it is, we will have to enjoy it for him and hope he approves.”

The election was conducted at November’s IEEE Board of Directors meeting and will become effective Jan. 1, 2016.
