Dr. Guruduth Banavar is Vice President of Cognitive Computing at IBM Research, responsible for the next generation of cognitive/AI systems known as Watson – these are systems that learn, reason, and interact naturally with people. Guru has worked across IBM’s businesses to co-innovate with clients in multiple industries, for example, to build a City Operations Center in Rio de Janeiro. Guru has also served on high-level boards, such as NY Governor Cuomo’s commission for improving New York State’s resilience to natural disasters after the devastation of Hurricane Sandy. His work has been featured in The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, The Economist, and other int’l media, and he received a 2009 National Innovation Award by the President of India for the Spoken Web project.
