IPaT Thursday Think Tank: Understanding Campus Life Through Considerate Data Gathering

*********************************
There is now a CONTENT FREEZE for Mercury while we switch to a new platform. It began on Friday, March 10 at 6pm and will end on Wednesday, March 15 at noon. No new content can be created during this time, but all material in the system as of the beginning of the freeze will be migrated to the new platform, including users and groups. Functionally the new site is identical to the old one. webteam@gatech.edu

Abstract: A few years ago, Andrew Campbell from Dartmouth started the StudentLife project as an experiment to see if relevant aspects of undergraduate and graduate life, such as mental health and academic performance, could be correlated or even predicted by evidence of the digital footprint of those students as they lived their daily lives. In addition to providing a valuable data set for activity recognition in ubiquitous computing, this project has inspired a lot of researchers to think more boldly about a university campus as a testbed for understanding wellness. Together with Dartmouth University, Carnegie Mellon University and Cornell University, we at Georgia Tech are interested in extended the seminal work of StudentLife. We are proposing the project CampusLife as a logical extension, which aims to collect data from relevant subsets of a campus community through their interactions with mobile and wearable technology, social media and the environment itself (through IoT instrumentation). What drives this project is both a human goal of understanding wellness for an important population (young adults) as well as how one can perform such experimentation and address the significant security and privacy challenges. We invite everyone from the Georgia Tech community to join for a conversation with the lead researchers from these four universities to help influence the directions of this nascent effort.
