Full Summary: The Architects Foundation, the American Institute of Architects, and the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture have announced an open Request for Qualifications for ACSA and ASPPH member schools and programs interested in joining the AIA Design & Health Research Consortium. The consortium is in its second year of gathering multi-disciplinary teams to advance and translate university-led research in the area of design and health. The purpose of this Request for Qualifications (RFQ) is to identity four to six qualified multi-disciplinary teams to join the AIA Design & Health Research Consortium (“the Consortium”). The Consortium is a joint project of Architects Foundation, the American Institute of Architects (“AIA”), and the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (“ACSA”), (collectively, the “Consortium Partners”) conceived to advance university-led research in the area of design and health. The Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health (“ASPPH”) provides additional support and guidance for the project.

Requirements for application to the Consortium outlined in this RFQ are similar to those outlined in the first year and include an emphasis on multi-disciplinary teams, an ASPPH or ACSA partner as the applying entity, and alignment with the AIA’s Six Approaches to Achieving Health through Built Environment Design & Policy (“Six Approaches”). However, under the direction of the AIA’s Design & Health Leadership Group (“DHLG”), the requirements have been modified to promote and accelerate the translation of research into practice. The modifications to the RFQ process will help to ensure that Consortium partners and teams achieve the three goals of the Consortium:

  • No. 1: Strengthen and expand the knowledge base that informs the connection between design and health by documenting and disseminating peer-reviewed quantitative and qualitative research projects.
  • No. 2: Develop evidence-based tools for practicing professionals informed by current research.
  • No. 3: Translate the outcomes of research about the connection between design and health for policymakers and the general public. As such, for the purpose of selecting the second cohort, preference will be given to applicants whose work emphasizes building-scale design, or evaluates a site-specific intervention’s effects on community health.
