Arts@Tech presents the Atlanta premiere of Huang Yi and KUKA, a dance performance with acclaimed Taiwanese choreographer and dancer Huang Yi and his robot companion KUKA, Oct 1-2 at the Ferst Center for the Arts.
Razor sharp precision is required for this stunning piece, which harmoniously weaves together the art of dance and the science of mechanical engineering. HUANG YI & KUKA is a poetic work that flawlessly intertwines modern dance and visual arts with the realm of robotics.
Choreographer Huang Yi developed a fascination for robots as a child, and now explores the idea of a robot as a flawless dance partner on stage. Office of the Arts Director Madison Cario saw the performance earlier this year in New York and states, “It is one of the most moving dance pieces I have ever seen. I was interested to see it because of the robotics work on campus, but was completely surprised at the artistry of the piece.”
The story line of the show follows Huang Yi, at first dancing with the robot as a partner and then directing KUKA to explore the stage itself, before KUKA begins to respond independently. By the end of the piece, KUKA becomes the choreographer, using a laser beam to manipulate two dancers who are seated in chairs before it.
Huang Yi will learn much about the Georgia Tech campus during his week-long residency with Arts@Tech. He will meet with students and faculty, will conduct a daytime informational-style presentation on Thursday, October 1, and two full-length performances on October 1 and 2. Ticket discounts are available for Georgia Tech students, staff and faculty.
