An Overview of the Security and Privacy IRI and New Research Projects – Wenke Lee, Georgia Tech

Abstract:
The introduction of the new IRI: the Institute for Information Security and Privacy. I will share my experience in working with various groups on campus to establish the IRI. I will then provide a quick overview of the organizational structure, and major research and education as well as tech-transfer initiatives of the IRI, hoping to convince our colleagues to participate in the IRI.
As an example of the exciting new research projects in security, I will provide a quick overview of our THEIA project in DARPA's Transparent Computing program. Taesoo, Alex, and I are leading a group of students to develop multi-layer data tagging and tracking mechanisms that will provide both complete and efficient information flow tracking. Our goal is to be able to identify the root cause and scope of the most advanced threats (or, APTs).
Bio:
Wenke Lee is the co-director of the Institute for Information Security & Privacy and also a professor of Computer Science in the College of Computing at Georgia Tech. His research expertise includes systems and network security, botnet detection and attribution, malware analysis, virtual machine monitoring, mobile systems security, and detection and mitigation of information manipulation on the Internet. Lee regularly leads large research projects funded by the National Science Foundation, Department of Defense, Department of Homeland Security, and private industry. Significant discoveries from his research group have been transferred to industry, and in 2006, Lee co-founded Damballa, Inc. to focus on detection and mitigation of advanced persistent threats.
