Description:
The communicative approach to language teaching is not very effective at getting the students to pronounce correctly (after all, precise pronunciation is seldom an impediment for successful communication). It is a very different thing to claim that formal teaching in phonetics can have an impact on improving the students’ pronunciation. For this reason, there have been studies devoted to test whether formal instruction is an effective way of improving the students’ pronunciation. For today's language classrooms, it is important to think about what technology is bringing to the pronunciation class and how best to guide learners through the experience. Speech Analyzer (www.sil.org) has been primarily designed to be used by anyone who is doing investigative research and teaching into the phonetics of a language. This talk will present how Speech Analyzer has been utilized at the Universidad de Granada in order to integrate technology into instructors' pronunciation teaching in an efficient and effective manner.
