There is now a CONTENT FREEZE for Mercury while we switch to a new platform. It began on Friday, March 10 at 6pm and will end on Wednesday, March 15 at noon. No new content can be created during this time, but all material in the system as of the beginning of the freeze will be migrated to the new platform, including users and groups. Functionally the new site is identical to the old one. webteam@gatech.edu

ABSTRACT
Queues in series, combinatorial correspondences, and determinants
(partly based on joint work with Jon Warren, University of Warwick)
There are deep connections between queues in series, noncolliding stochastic processes, and eigenvalues of random matrices. At the heart of these connections lies a combinatorial correspondence ascribed to Robinson, Schensted, Knuth, and Burge. This talk presents some of the remarkable consequences of this correspondence. In terms of queues in series, we give a complete probabilistic description of certain associated stochastic processes. Determinants of matrices play a pivotal role in this description.
