Atlanta traffic can be frustrating on a normal day, but an unusual set of circumstances may make Thursday, September 3, a bit more so.

The Georgia Tech Athletic Association is trying to raise awareness of three major events that will have a broad cumulative impact on the campus community and the city’s afternoon commute:

  • The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets will host their season opener against Alcorn State at 7:30 p.m. Fans are asked not to arrive on campus until 5 p.m., but may be arriving as early as noon.
  • The Atlanta Falcons will host their final preseason game at 7 p.m. in the Georgia Dome. Experience suggests that a significant number of the 65,000 fans expected to attend will use North Avenue, Northside Drive, and other roadways adjacent to campus.
  • Lastly, Vice President Joseph Biden will be in Atlanta delivering remarks at 7:30 p.m. at the Ahavath Achim Synagogue in Buckhead. It is expected, though not confirmed, that his path to the venue will take his motorcade north on I-75/I-85 through downtown and Midtown as he travels to Northside Drive.

The Institute will maintain normal hours of operation. However, because traffic around campus is expected to reach peak volume quickly, managers and supervisors are asked to be as flexible as possible in allowing employees to depart campus early or telework where appropriate on Thursday afternoon.
