There is now a CONTENT FREEZE for Mercury while we switch to a new platform. It began on Friday, March 10 at 6pm and will end on Wednesday, March 15 at noon. No new content can be created during this time, but all material in the system as of the beginning of the freeze will be migrated to the new platform, including users and groups. Functionally the new site is identical to the old one. webteam@gatech.edu

Title: Next Generation Mobile Communications for High-Speed Railway

Abstract:
High-speed railway (HSR) has brought much convenience for peoples’ travelling. To ensure safe and reliable operation of HSR, the train operation control system acts as a nerve center. To make such nerve center work well with less time delay, maintaining a reliable bidirectional communication link between the train and the ground, dedicated mobile communication systems such as GSM for railway (GSM-R) and LTE for railway (LTE-R) play key roles. Moreover, rapid growth of future railway services and applications such as real-time high-definition (HD) video surveillance has aroused 1 Gbps data transmission rate with 100 MHz bandwidth at least. Thus, higher frequency band such as mm-wave technique, the fifth generation (5G) technique and corresponding mobile communication network should be designed accordingly to provide high capacity and high data transmission rate for newly developed railway services and applications. In this presentation, the key techniques and challenges for GSM-R, LTE-R and the fifth generation techniques implemented in HSR will be discussed in detail.
