There is now a CONTENT FREEZE for Mercury while we switch to a new platform. It began on Friday, March 10 at 6pm and will end on Wednesday, March 15 at noon. No new content can be created during this time, but all material in the system as of the beginning of the freeze will be migrated to the new platform, including users and groups. Functionally the new site is identical to the old one. webteam@gatech.edu

Summary Sentence: GT partners with three universities for ideation

Full Summary: The Georgia Tech Innovation Manufacturing Center (GT-IMC) will host an open ideation event around the theme of “Connecting the Individual through Revolutionary Fibers and Textiles” for stakeholders interested in joining the RFT-MII team.

The Georgia Tech Innovation Manufacturing Center (GT-IMC) will host an open ideation event around the theme of “Connecting the Individual through Revolutionary Fibers and Textiles” for stakeholders interested in joining the RFT-MII team. The event is co-sponsored by the Institute for Materials and will be held Aug. 20 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Georgia Tech Manufacturing Institute, Room 114, 813 Ferst Drive NW.

The event will begin with an overview of the Connected Individual theme and deep dive into revolutionary technical textiles through exemplar projects on next generation clothing, shelter, footwear and bandages.  The objective is to actively engage the industry in these projects and identify industry and university resources to successfully execute them Yet another objective is to engage the participants in defining the new paradigm of a “Value Web” for the operation and organization of the industry exemplified by the proposed RFT-MII model of a main coordinating facility complemented by a network of regional IMCs (such as the GT-IMC) with their core competencies. Finally, the participants will help lay the foundation for the long-term operating model for the GT-IMC.

The federal government has launched a competition for leading manufacturers, universities and non-profits to form a new manufacturing innovation institute focused on revolutionary fibers and textiles technologies (RFT-MII). The $150 million in public-private investment over five years will build an industry-wide collaborative capacity for design, rapid prototyping, manufacturing scale-up and knowledge management for high performance technical textiles in a broad range of applications.

Georgia Tech has partnered with North Carolina State University, the University of Massachusetts at Lowell, the University of Oregon, industry partners and associations to create a viable and sustainable ecosystem that will revolutionize the fibers and textiles industry. The four universities will each serve as an Innovation Manufacturing Center (IMC) that will focus on the regional needs of the industry base which it serves, including sustainable research and development and educational enterprises that will ensure a pipeline of key resources to maintain US leadership in fibers and textiles manufacturing.
