Rachael Spiewak and the Sopo Bicycle Co-op
Viva Studio Spring lecture series
Location TBD. Facebook Viva Studio for final details.
The concept for the Sopo Bicycle Co-Op was developed among a group of 60 community members, many of whom relied on their bicycles as a primary mode of transportation for economic and environmental reasons. Repairs at ordinary bicycle shops were too costly and slow. Members of this community preferred to maintain their own bikes, but not all had their own set of tools or all of the knowledge necessary. To bridge this gap, they pooled resources to develop a collectively owned and operated bicycle repair shop. Sopo Bicycle Cooperative moved into its shop location in October 2005, and it is still there today.
