Dr. Cortese will offer a perspective on the answers to this timely question while examining the quest for increasing value in healthcare.

ABOUT DR. CORTESE
Denis Cortese is President and CEO of Mayo Clinic, an international leader in applying engineering and computing expertise to creating advanced health informatics systems that contribute to affordable, quality healthcare. He is a graduate of Temple University Medical School and completed Internal Medicine and Pulmonary Diseases training at Mayo Clinic. He served in the U.S. Navy Medical Corp during 1974-1976. He is a Professor of Medicine and former director of the pulmonary disease training program.

Dr. Cortese's major research interests and publications have been in interventional bronchoscopy including appropriate use of photodynamic therapy, endobronchial laser therapy and endobronchial stents. He served as a president of the International Photodynamic Association.

His memberships include: The Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences; the IOM Roundtable on Evidence Based Medicine (chair); Healthcare Leadership Council (chair); Harvard/Kennedy Healthcare Policy Group; FRESH-Thinking (Focused Research on Efficient, Secure Healthcare); Advisory Board, World Community Grid; Presidents/CEOs Council of the American Medical Group Association (chair); Division on Engineering and Physical Science (DEPS), National Research Council; Academia Nacional de Medicina (Mexico); the Royal College of Physicians (London).

Dr. Cortese received the Ellis Island Award in 2007 and the Medal of Merit Award in 2008.
