AE welcomes alumnus Gary Weissel, who has accepted an appointment to the School of AE Advisory Council.
Gary M. Weissel is a Vice President with ICF SH&E, a leading aviation consultancy. He is the co-Managing Officer for the firm's Aviation & Aerospace practice, leading a team of over 50 consultants in assignments covering all areas of aviation including supply chain, maintenance repair and overhaul, airline strategy and operations, aviation related financial advisory services, and aviation safety and security.
Mr. Weissel joined ICF SH&E in 2000 as a Director to start an aircraft interiors management practice but quickly expanded his role to become involved in all facets of the company's aviation related services. He has led a large variety of assignments during his time at ICF SH&E including new aircraft product development market studies, airline start-ups, program management of major aircraft conversions, airline bankruptcy advisory support, aircraft phase assignment and aircraft remarketing/ sourcing. He was a key participant in the firm's three phase assignment with the Department of Transportation Office of Inspector General's project to audit the US Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA) oversight of the commercial aircraft production, certification and operations in the United States. More recently, he has led the firm's expansion in China and the broader Asia region.
Mr. Weissel began his career in 1989 at Delta Air Lines (Delta) as an engineering co-op student through Georgia Tech's cooperative education program. After graduation, he joined Delta full time as an engineer in the Technical Operations department. He held a number of different positions supporting aircraft, engine and component maintenance, system upgrades and modifications. Prior to leaving Delta in 1998, he was the Product Manager in charge of the design and specification for all of Delta's aircraft cabin interiors. This included a fleet of over 550 aircraft and Delta's 120 new aircraft on order with Boeing at the time. He had the privilege of participating in the Boeing sponsored airline working group on design of the 767-400 interior.
After leaving Delta in 1998, Mr. Weissel joined B/E Aerospace in Winston-Salem, NC as a Senior Program Manager in the Seating Products Group. He was responsible for program management of a large range of programs for products delivered to both new aircraft production at Boeing and Airbus and aftermarket reconfigurations and installations at airlines such as Lauda Air, Aer Lingus, Swiss Air, British Airways, South African Airways and Scandinavian Airlines. While at B/E, he participated in a number of programs on Boeing aircraft which tested and then set the standard for the certification approach by similarity for many new 16G seat programs.
He is an active participant in a number of industry associations including the International Society of Transport Aircraft Traders (ISTAT) and the National Business Aviation Association (NBAA). Through his work with ICF SH&E's safety and security practice, he has completed ISO9001:2000 lead auditor training and the International Air Transport Association's (IATA) Operational Safety Auditor (IOSA) training program.
Mr. Weissel is regularly called upon to act as an expert witness in aviation related litigation both in the US and abroad. He is a regular speaker at industry events and conferences, has appeared on CNN as an expert in aviation program managmement, and is regularly quoted in industry periodicals and publications.
Mr. Weissel earned his Bachelor of Aerospace Engineering Degree from Georgia Tech in 1993.
