Dr. Hernando Jimenez, a Research Engineer in AE's Aerospace Systems Design Laboratory (ASDL), loves his work with Georgia Tech's TEC camp where he has helped since 2008. Middle-school aged girls are the fortunate recipients of Dr. Jimenez' time, experience and dedication, along with others like him. The girls are encouraged to pursue STEM fields including aerospace engineering. They come to the Georgia Tech campus for 1 week to engage in hands-on engineering and computing activities.
Dr. Jimenez said, "It can be intimidating, but it's very rewarding to observe campers having fun and becoming genuinely intrigued about the different concepts they are learning while putting them into practice. It is also rewarding to see them realize that engineering is not beyond them and that they can in fact be quite successful at it."
The Women in Engineering Program (WIE) at Georgia Tech began the camp in 2001. WIE Program Director, Dr. Christine Valle, said of Dr. Jimenez, "Hernando has also helped the Women in Engineering Program a lot with hosting another AE event, our Introduce a Girl (IAG) to engineering event last February, an event geared towards middle-school girls, held annually on a Saturday morning. Hernando is REALLY amazing with these girls and can get them excited about AE, whether the event lasts 2 hours or 1 week. I've never seen anyone with more passion and ease in relating to that age group! I feel incredibly fortunate to have him be involved."
