There is now a CONTENT FREEZE for Mercury while we switch to a new platform. It began on Friday, March 10 at 6pm and will end on Wednesday, March 15 at noon. No new content can be created during this time, but all material in the system as of the beginning of the freeze will be migrated to the new platform, including users and groups. Functionally the new site is identical to the old one. webteam@gatech.edu

Figure illustrates the bandgap principle. (a) When a wave is incident on a periodic material, multiple reflected waves are created at the interfaces. If these waves are in phase, they interfere constructively and thus prevent the original wave from propagating within the structure. (b) If the multiple reflected waves are not in phase, they do not interfere constructively and the original wave is allowed to propagate. The range of frequencies for which the original wave is forbidden from propagating within the structure is known as the bandgap. (Figure adapted with permission from Scientific American).
