IPST hosted a conference during June of the Pulp and Paper Education and Research Alliance, a network for the benefit of education and research programs in the industry. IPST director Norman Marsolan and Georgia Tech professor Jeff Hsieh hosted. Representatives of eight of the ten member universities attended, as well as the Forest Products Lab and TAPPI. Two universities as well as the Agenda 2020 Technology Alliance participated via streaming video broadcast, enabled by recently purchased equipment which will serve future IPST member functions as well. The two-day meeting featured discussions of curriculum and program changes for undergraduates; scholarships and funding; and internships, co-ops, and student exchanges. The group discussed Massive Online Open Courses (MOOC) and their potential application to the industry.
The PPERA Alliance consists of the major pulp and paper schools IPST/Georgia Tech, NC State, the University of Minnesota (whose director currently heads the Alliance), the State University of New York, Miami University of Ohio, Auburn, the University of Maine, the University of Washington, the University of Wisconsin at Stevens Point, and Western Michigan.
