The Atlanta City Council is considering rescinding a moratorium on commercial building permits along Memorial Drive following complaints from developers. Councilwoman Natalyn Archibong, who sponsored the six-month ban on accepting building permit applications the council approved unanimously two weeks ago, introduced an ordinance at the end of Monday’s council meeting that would rescind the action. According to the ordinance, neighborhood and community groups along Memorial Drive have not had a chance to review a redevelopment study of the corridor undertaken last fall by graduate students at Georgia Tech and make recommendations to the council. The study, lead by School of City and Regional Planning Professor of Practice Mike Dobbins, suggested redesigning the roadway through intersection improvements that would slow traffic, making the corridor more walkable and, thus, a better fit for the mixed-use projects being built there.
